I’d like to introduce you to our newest Hamilton family member, our little one, our fur baby, our precious girl Julia.
I decided that today I will give you the full story, start to finish, because, selfishly, writing it all out is a good way for Ryan and I to document and remember the story. Dog lovers of the internet world unite!
Ryan and I have always wanted a dog. I grew up with dogs, we both consider ourselves “dog people”, and we watch puppy videos on instagram at the end of long days together to feel the happy aww-cute feelings. Dog ownership has always been our dream + destiny.
My dream was to get a puppy, maybe a beagle, probably beagle, and love it like a little baby.
Since we’ve been married, we’ve been looking forward to the day that we could become a family of three with a little fur baby. We had decided that we would get a dog around our two year anniversary (May 28th 2016), because that seems about the right time to settle down with the responsibility that a puppy brings.
Then a few months ago, it just became too much to bear. Like no joke, I would look at puppy pictures and start to cry because it hurt my heart so bad. Then one Saturday morning in early January, Ryan started looking at puppies on instagram and on local classifieds like he usually did everrrrrry morning. Yup, I’m not the only puppy obsessed one over here.
He slid his phone across our kitchen table and showed me an ad for beagle puppies. The conversation went exactly like this:
Hilary: “Ryan… seriously stop torturing me. You know we can’t get a puppy until spring.”
Ryan: “They have four females.”
Hilary: “Oh my gosh! We have to go.”
Like that, we cancelled our plans and set an appointment to go look that evening.
When were driving to see the puppies that night, I told Ryan: “you know Julia might not be there. We are just looking.” Yeahhhh we had the name picked out long before we have had a dog. Ryan actually decided on the name last summer, and we were hooked. The name just seemed to fit for what we wanted in our little girl.
We wanted a cuddly and sweet little beagle that would enjoy all our outdoor summer adventures in the mountains. It’s just a pretty, simple name for a pretty, simply adorable girl.
It was actually Ryan that fell in love with her little bunny hops first. When we arrived, the breeder handed me three of the little baby girl beagles and handed Ryan the fourth little one. The little runt. It took him less than a minute before he looked up at me with gushing eyes as he told me, “Hils, this is her. This is our little Julia.”
My heart was falling in love irrationally fast with exciting thoughts of bringing our little girl home but doubting how could I possibly wait five more weeks until she was old enough for us to bring home. It was love at first sight for both Ryan and I, and that night we stayed up late researching everything we could to prepare ourselves for being the best puppy parents possible for a future child.
It just seemed fitting that we were able to bring home our love child on Valentine’s weekend. She is perfect for us in every single way, and she must have known it too because she had no issues adjusting. She walked into our apartment, and calmy sniffed around like she just knew it was home.
What we know about Julia: she’s a full beagle, she’s the runt of a litter of ten puppies (that poor mom!), she has the softest fur ever, her favorite color is pink, she’s VERY expressive and great at communicating what she wants and doesn’t like, she gets annoyed that Ryan always seems to want to play with her ears when she is trying to sleep, she’s super smart and has learned that dad is awesome at playing and mom is for cuddles, she’s a little priss who hates the cold and rain, she hates her harness so much that she refuses to walk when it’s on, her favorite toy is Flappy the pink flamingo, and she loves Sunday morning when all three of us lay in bed and just spend time cuddling and give her oodles of kisses.
Her favorite activities are: Snuggles. Sleeping in with mom. Playing tag with dad. Playing with her best friend “Mini” (the poodle puppy next door). Sniffing and licking the horses in our neighborhood. Eating mom’s lacy panties. Giving kisses. Following mom everywhere.
And generally being the cutest, nicest, most affectionate dog ever.
We love her SO MUCH, you guys. So much, that yes we did family photos the day after we got her to capture all the joy we felt bringing her home and becoming a family of three. She completes our life, and the photos absolutely capture how in love and obsessed we are with her. Like, maybe I am fully dorking out with tears in my eyes right now as I write those words out. Gah, Mush City! Pull yourself together, Hils. All that to say, I’m so thankful that I have a dog-loving group of internet friends that I can share her with. You guys get me.
So there you have it.
The sweet, long-anticipated story of how we found our little Julia.
